Having grown up in western Nebraska seems as if we always had plenty of chores to accomplish prior to going to our little one room school house. One day in prticular stands out in my memory of embarrassing moments. We had risen early in order to get all 25 cows milked and the milked then separated into cream and in the cans ready to go to the creamery. Time was running short inorder to make it to school on time and I failed to change my boots. needless to say there were several comments made about something smelling rather "crappy" once I arrived at school. I had to fess up and admit it was me! Called my most accomodating Mother and she came to my aid with a clean pair of shoes, ones that hadn't been used during farm chores of any sorts. Thank goodness for Moms! Dad just laughed.

I have a very clear memory of another little girl stealing a cookie right of my hands in kindergarten. I was pretty F.O.B. (fresh off the boat) back then and couldn't even speak English to defend my snack! That and thinking my teacher was the most beautiful woman in the world.

out to play at recess, i decided to pick up a cruddy looking interior to what was a orange magic marker. it, of course, stained my hands badly. too embarrassed to say what i had done, and request to wash my hands we then scooted off to music class. it was here that we had received new music books, which i in turn, marred with my bright orange hands. for the next several weeks the music teacher held up the book in front of the class, speaking about the disrespect that had been done to our brand-new books. i sat looking at the floor. whoops.

In High School one of my fondest memories was our class photo. It was done with an old school panning camera that took a series of photos and mashed them together. Well my friend and I timed it just right and started on the left for the first picture and ran around the back of the stands to be on the right for the last picture of the panorama. The photographers/teachers had no idea we had done this and we appeared in our class photo twice. It was awesome.

Maybe it wasn't the first day of school, but it was towards the beginning of the kindergarten year. It was my mom's day to run the carpool which consisted of myself, another girl, and a boy. When my mom pulled in front of the small school to let us out we all jumped out of the minivan. And.then....the boy slammed the sliding door shut so hard that the force of it completed shattered the glass in the window. Now that is one strong five year old!

One of my most embarrassing moments from high school actually had to do with a school picture. As a young man growing up I had often gotten compliments on my wavy brown hair. Taking these to heart I decided, in my sophomore year to let my hair grow out. Being otherwise un-vain, I then didn't think about my appearance much at all for the next year. When yearbooks came out I eagerly pulled one open to see how my flowing locks had transferred to the mandatory picture. I passed over and over the row where my name was listed but I just couldn't find my picture. Suddenly, I realized that the brunette young lady third from the left, whose face I had skipped over repeatedly, was actually me. My flowing locks had changed my entire appearance enough that even I thought I looked like a girl. When I asked my friends why they hadn't told me they just laughed and said it was just too funny.

My silliest back to school moment was in first grade. I grew up in Puerto Rico and lived a block away from school so my mom would walk me there in the mornings. My mom was terrified of lizards (and there are TONS in the Caribbean), and one jumped on her shirt. I used to catch lizards so I just pointed out that she had one on her, and my mom jumped around like a crazy lady to shake the lizard off of her shirt. All the other parents and students were driving by and there was my mom doing a crazy lizard dance. I cracked up then and it makes for a sweet silly memory now.

My mom usually made me wear a skirt or dress to school...because that's the kind of mom she was/is. I remember being in kindergarten at Northview Elementary (1970-71) and going to the restroom and, I guess because I was 5?, I took my skirt off, instead of just lifting it up. I stayed in there for what seems like a very long time trying to get it back on and finally had to hold it up and ask Mrs. Newell for help. Stylish, but not so smart.

I was in Sixth grade at the time. We were taught Spanish through a TV program. I sat at the far right side across the room from the door. I was humming through the Spanish class, and my teacher said " whomever was humming, would they please stop, or go sit in the hallway if they wished to continue." Unfortunately, all I heard was, "whomever is humming please sit in the hallway." So, while I was walking out to the hallway, everyone began laughing and making fun of me for walking out, I went into the hallway, sat on the floor until my teacher, Mrs. Stout came out and asked if I really wanted to continue humming. I was totally embarrassed walking back into class.

We lived in a rural area and I had to walk through a field to catch the bus to school. One of my favorite memories is of the times when the weather was cold and wet and my mom would put bread sacks over my shoes to keep them dry. I was so horrified. I always took them off before anyone could see me. There was a big stash of balled up bread sacks stuck into the corner of the fence before you reached the bus stop.

First grade. I decided I wanted to go home so I sneaked out of class. How I managed this is beyond me - I even packed my bag and stacked my chair on my desk. I loved my first grader teacher, but was the woman completely blind? I went to the office and told them I was sick and needed to go home. They called the nurse and my parents - and it became a big, embarrassing fiasco from there. Worst of all, I had to go back to class. Best of all, I'm a teacher now - and I totally understand when a kid has just had enough!

There are so very many.....but one that sticks out would be Senior Night. This was an assembly in the auditorium with everyone's family. They called up each student to recognize them for scholarships won, etc. My name was called. I headed to the stage. i approached the stairs, and I tripped up the stairs. I was so cool. :)
